FAQ: How to use the Drop Shipper’s Directory

What does "Drop Ship" mean?

Drop ship means that a manufacturer or warehousing company sells you a small or low quantity product order at a wholesale price and ships it to your customer at a flat rate freight charge. You never have to stock the product or deal with shipping companies, freight forwarders or added fees.

How does drop shipping work?

Once you find a buyer, you select a company from the Drop Shippers Directory that produces or stocks the product your customer wants to purchase. Then you get a price quote from the Drop Shipper that includes the cost of shipping. The drop shipper may also charge a small handling fee. You add a profit margin for yourself and collect payment in advance from the buyer. Upon receipt of payment, the supplier completes the order and ships the product directly to your customer.

How do I know that I’m not being overcharged?

Shop around. Get a price quote from at least 3 suppliers. Then do a comparison of the value of the merchandise, pricing factors, shipping charges, etc. You should avoid any company that wants to charge you a “participation fee” just to do business with them. They should only charge for the cost of the product, cost of freight, and perhaps a small handling fee.

How do I keep my customers from contacting the drop shippers?

Drop shippers do not place any labels or invoices on your package. Your customers never know a third party is involved and will think the product came directly from you. Sometimes, you can arrange to have the drop shipper use your own private label. It’s a question worth asking the drop shipper if you want or need that type of control.

What types of products can I “private label”?

Cosmetics, food products, first aid items and printed materials such as books and manuals are often sold through major distributors under the private label of their resellers. It may cost an additional fee to print and apply your labels, but can be well worth the cost if you want “your own brand name” recognition.

Who handles support, returns and refunds?

Ask the supplier if the product carries a warranty or guarantee; find out if they have a returns policy; and, ask if they offer customer support if necessary. If the supplier stands behind the merchandise in any way, get all their terms in writing. Some products may be sold AS IS, which means there is no recourse if the buyer is dissatisfied with the product. To avoid misunderstanding, all policies and terms should be disclosed to the buyer in writing prior to placing the order with the drop shipper.

How long will it take to drop ship my orders?

It may take anywhere from 3-10 working days to drop ship an order. However, a "rush" order can usually be shipped sooner and there is usually an additional cost for quick delivery. Discuss all purchase and delivery terms and costs with the supplier before giving a price quote to your buyer. You’ll save a lot of time if you have all the answers up front to help your customer make the buying decision.
